Jazz breaking news: Gwilym Simcock, Neil Yates and Phil Bancroft for Manchester
Monday, May 10, 2010
Details are beginning to emerge of this year’s Manchester Jazz Festival, the major festival of its kind in the north west.
Set to be held from 23-31 July the organisers are still awaiting confirmation for a chunk of the programme but so far the line-up includes the Gwilym Simcock/Mike Walker/Steve Swallow/Adam Nussbaum band at the Royal Northern College of Music on 27 July, Scottish saxophonist Phil Bancroft at the RNCM on 28 July and a special commission performed by trumpeter Neil Yates titled ‘Surroundings’ with a large ensemble at St Ann’s church.
BBC Radio 3 jazz programme Jazz on 3 will also broadcast from the festival this year. We’ll bring you more details as they come in.
Meanwhile, still in the north west, the Wigan Jazz Festival celebrates its 25th anniversary this year with a broadly-based mainstream jazz programme from 10-17 July featuring headliners Monty Alexander, Curtis Stigers, Chris Barber, Stan Tracey and Bobby Shew. Highly rated newcomer pianist Gerald Clayton is also on the bill in a double header with gospel a cappella group Take Six as well as visiting college big bands from the US.
