Jazz breaking news: Hideaway Club Announces New Programming Strand

Friday, April 16, 2010

Every Wednesday in May Hideaway, Streatham’s best kept secret, will present some leading UK jazz ensembles, including Martin Drew’s New Jazz Couriers and Martin Speake’s Generations quartet.

Saxophonist Martin Speake’s global reputation continues to grow having worked with a plethora of international artists including Paul Motian, the Bad Plus’ Ethan Iverson and Swedish-great Bobo Stenson. In keeping, his gig at the Hideaway on May 19 will feature USA drumming legend and sometime London resident Jeff Williams.

Another drummer who has worked extensively stateside, Martin Drew’s now long standing New Jazz Couriers group will feature vibes-man Jim Hart as well as the enigmatic tenor sax of Mornington Lockett on May 26.

The hard swinging Drugstore Cowboy quartet, led by hard-boppers Quentin Collins (trumpet) and Brandon Allen (tenor) will appear on May 12 – be sure to look out for Ross Stanley’s multi-tasking on Hammond organ.

Polar Bear’s Mark Lockheart features alongside the French guitarist Jonathan Bratoeff of the F-IRE collective in Andrea Vicari's quintet. She will present her ‘The Mirror’ suite, originally a commission for the 2009 Leasowes festival, on May 5 at Hideaway which can be found at 2 Empire Mews, only 1 minute from Streatham main line station.
