Jazz breaking news: Jazz arrangements of Stevie Wonder songs featured on new Orla Murphy album

Monday, February 27, 2012

Up-and-coming jazz singer Orla Murphy launches her second album Wonderous Visions in the Lounge of the Leicester Square Theatre in London next week.

Eagle eyed readers may notice the pun in the title of the Golden Records release, which has a Stevie Wonder theme.

Murphy has made new arrangements of Stevie Wonder songs, mostly from his 1970s period, along with an original song by Murphy written specially for the album. Tracks are ‘All I Do’, ‘Another Star’, ‘Visions’, ‘Heaven Help Us All’, ‘Seems So Long’, ‘Big Brother’, ‘They Won’t Go When I Go’, ‘Too High’, ‘I Don’t Know Why (I Love You)’, ‘Timeless’, and ‘Make Sure You’re Sure (Take 2)’. Murphy, from Belfast, now based in London, released her debut album Wishful Thinking which was co-produced with pianist Simon Wallace in 2008.

The singer is joined on Wonderous Visions by pianist John Crawford, bassist/harmonica player Andy Hamill, and drummer Davide Giovannini. The launch is on Tuesday 6 March and tickets are £10. Other upcoming dates include Soho Pizzeria, Beak Street London W1 (9 March); DaScalzo Brasserie, London SW1 (23 March); and The Hub, Coventry University (24 March).
