Jazz breaking news: Joanna MacGregor and Tom Arthurs get graphic

Wednesday, September 25, 2013

Genre-hopping virtuoso pianist Joanna MacGregor (pictured) is at the heart of a new audiovisual touring project exploring graphic scores – whereby graphic artworks, comic strips and abstract contemporary art replaces standard notation – early pioneers of which include the likes of György Ligeti and Karlheinz Stockhausen, and latterly such experimental composers such as Earle Brown, John Cage and Brian Eno.

Here the programme spans classical, experimental and jazz as inspired by artworks by George Crumb, Cathy Berberian, Fred Frith, John Cage, Wadada Leo Smith (such as his ‘Luminous Axis’) Cornelius Cardew, Tom Phillips and Jennifer Walshe whose work will be projected as a striking visual back drop to the musicians.

These include vocalist Elaine Mitchener, trumpeter Tom Arthurs, cellist Oliver Coates and electronics artist Isambard Khroustaliov and pianist MacGregor, all of whom appear at the following venues: Turner Sims, Southampton (3 Oct); RNCM, Manchester (4 Oct); The Sage, Gateshead (5 Oct); LSO ST Luke’s, London (6 Oct); Howard Assembly Room, Leeds (10 Oct); and St John The Evangelist, Oxford (11 Oct).
