Jazz breaking news: John McLaughlin Booked For Rare Ronnie Scott’s Appearance And Brit-Jazz Fest Line-up Unveiled

Monday, May 9, 2011

Tickets go on sale today to the general public for what surely will be one of the most in-demand jazz gigs this year in the capital.

It’s not until Monday 11 July but Ronnie’s will host on that day none other than guitar great John McLaughlin, who for the majority of his concert appearances restricts himself to large concert halls. He has not appeared in Ronnie Scott’s for many years and will perform with his band the 4th dimension alongside fellow Brit Gary Husband, Etienne Mbappé, and Ranjit Barot. Although it’s for one night only the band will play to two separate houses with tickets for the first house starting from £60 and for the second from £50.

In a separate announcement Ronnie’s has unveiled details of this year’s Brit-Jazz Fest to be held from 31 July-14 August. It’s the third outing of the festival which has proved a big success at the club, and is sponsored by Jazzwise. While not all confirmed bookings have been released just yet Ronnie’s has confirmed that the opening night will feature the Ronnie Scott’s Orchestra playing the music of the late John Barry.

Other first week bookings are: Celebrating Humph with The Humphrey Lyttelton Septet featuring guests + Laura Jurd Quintet (1 August); The Michael Garrick Big Band + John Etheridge & Christian Garrick (2 August); Beats and Pieces plus Kairos 4tet (3 August); Claire Martin and Richard Rodney Bennett plus Bobby Wellins Quartet (4 August); Lucinda Belle Orchestra plus Earl Okin (5 August); TBC (6 August).

The second week begins with Jazz Verse Jukebox hosted by Jumoke Fashola featuring special guests (7 August); Matthew Halsall featuring Nat Birchall “A tribute to John and Alice Coltrane” + Code5 feat. Orphy Robinson (8 August); Eclectica + Gwyneth Herbert (9 August); Tommy Smith’s Karma + Newt (10 August); Gwilym Simcock Trio + Stephano D’Silva (11 August); BLINQ plus Ayanna Witter-Johnson (12 August); Matthew Herbert Big Band plus Seaming To Trio (13 August) and Natalie Williams Soul Family with special guest Roachford (14 August).
