Jazz breaking news: José James, Pat Martino and Troyka for Band on the Wall
Wednesday, March 6, 2013
Manchester’s historic, now resurgent, music venue Band On the Wall, has a healthy series of jazz bookings featuring a mix of home grown and international names running through to May.
Covering a multitude of stylistic bases there’s jazzy beat-laden trip hop from Edinburgh-based group The Hidden Orchestra (8 Mar), proggy grooves from Troyka (11 Apr), as well as gigs from hard firing saxophonists Gilad Atzmon (14 Mar) and Marius Neset (25 April). The dates also include a performance of Cinema Soloriens, the multi-media project from leader of The Sun Ra Arkestra and sax icon Marshall Allen and Gong poet/guitarist/singer Daevid Allen accompanying James Harrar’s experimental video imagery (4 April), plus more psychedelic soul sounds from legendary singer/ guitarist Shuggie Otis (9 May) and contemporary vocal-led soul funk from José James (13 April, pictured above) performing songs from his fine new Blue Note album, No Beginning No End.
Two big US names also make welcome appearances with fusion maestros Yellowjackets and veteran guitar virtuoso Pat Martino also set to appear. All jazz-related dates are as follows: The Magic Band (7 Mar); The Hidden Orchestra (8 Mar); Hypnotic Brass Ensemble (9 Mar); Gilad Atzmon Orient House Ensemble (14 Mar); Yellowjackets (17 Mar); Dave Stapleton Quintet (28 Mar); Cinema Soloriens featuring Marshall Allen and Daevid Allen (4 April); Troyka plus Anton Hunter Trio (11 April); José James plus JD73 Electric Trio (13 April); Joyce (19 April); Marius Neset Quartet (25 April); Sonar (2 May); Shuggie Otis (9 May); and Pat Martino Trio (24 May).
