Jazz breaking news: Julian Joseph talks Shadowball and plays Ellington at the Southbank
Friday, March 15, 2013
Pianist and composer Julian Joseph (pictured left) talks about his jazz opera Shadowball, which draws on the stories of black basketball players from the 1930s and 40s, with the opera’s librettist Mike Phillips in a discussion with images and music at the Purcell Room on Saturday 23 March from 3.
30 to 4.30pm. The talk is part of the America 1900-1950 strand of the year-long series of concerts and events, The Rest Is Noise, which examines how war, race, sex and politics has shaped the music of the 20th century.
Immediately following the talk, Julian Joseph performs a special concert, ‘The 1938 Project’, with a line-up of leading UK jazz playing his arrangements of popular 1938 music from Duke Ellington to Irving Berlin. The concert takes place in the Front Room foyer of the Queen Elizabeth Hall at 5.30pm. The following morning a ‘Breakfast With Ellington’ session takes place in the Front Room from 11am-12noon with composer Fraser Trainer exploring various facets of the Duke’s music.
