Jazz breaking news: Lagavulin Islay Jazz Festival returns for its 15th year in the Hebrides

This year’s Lagavulin Islay Jazz Festival is set to return to the Scottish island for the 15th year from 13-15 September.

The festival is held in Islay’s village halls, distilleries, bird centres, Gaelic college, bars and hotels around the island, which, along with the beaches, wildlife, award-winning golf course and local Lagavulin whiskey all add to the unique atmosphere of the festival.

The festival’s line-up includes former EST drummer Magnus Öström (pictured), leading his own band, cinematic jazz-folk group Trio Libero featuring saxophonist Andy Sheppard, bassist Michel Benita and drummer Sebastian Rochford, UK pianist Kit Downes and his trio, American stride and boogie-woogie piano player Stephanie Trick, and a “super Islay trio” made up of regular festival visitors: bassist Mario Caribe, trumpeter Colin Steele and guitarist Graeme Stephen. Local vocalist Sheena Swanson also presents a brand new five piece comprising of Islay musicians.

Friday 13 Sept: Stephanie Trick (Lagavulin Distillery 6.30pm); Sandy Tweedale and Tim Elliott (Ionad Chaluim Chille Ile 8.00pm); Trio Libero (Lagavulin Distillery 8.30pm); Grooveyard (Bruichladdich Hall 10.30pm).

Saturday 14 Sept: Stephanie Trick Nova Scotia Jazz Band (Rinns Hall, Porthaven 12.00pm); Calum Gourlay Trio (Lagavulin Distillery 12.30pm); Mario Caribe, Colin Steele, Graeme Stephen (Laphroaig Distillery 3.30pm); 95 Roots Wednesday Gray (Ionad chaluim Chille Ile 7.00pm); Magnus Ostrom Band (Lagavulin Distillery 8.30pm).

Sunday 15 Sept: Blues N Trouble (Bruichaladdich Hall 9.30); Mario Caribe, Graeme Stephen, Chris Wallace (RSPB, 12.00pm); Stephanie Trick, Wednesday Gray (Ardbeg Distillery 12.00pm); Mario Caribe, Colin Steele, Graeme Stephen (Outback Gallery 3.00pm); Kit Downes Trio (Ionad Chaluim Chille Ile 6.00pm); Magnus Ostrom Band (Bruichladdich Hall 8.30pm).
