Jazz breaking news: Liane Carroll, Michael Mwenso And Peter King Quartet For Highgate Jazz With Soul Festival

Tuesday, September 20, 2011

The first ever Highgate Jazz With Soul Festival is to take place this weekend, on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 September, over two floors of Highgate pub The Old Crown in north London.

The line-up this weekend includes Liane Carroll (Saturday 24 September); Michael Mwenso/Leon Greening Trio (24 Sept); the Peter King Quartet (Sunday 25 September); Tim Lapthorn trio with the Navarra String Quartet (25 Sept); and Brandon Allen Sextet featuring Nigel Hitchcock and Mark Nightingale (25 Sept).

Liane Carroll – whose latest album Up And Down was released to acclaim in the summer – is no stranger to Jazzwise readers (see ‘On The Upside’ in Jazzwise 153), well known for her emotive and honest delivery, and widely appreciated, winning numerous accolades including BBC jazz awards and a Parliamentary jazz award for musician of the year.

Trombonist and vocalist Michael Mwenso, who leads the Late Late Show jam sessions in the main room at Ronnie Scott’s and whose lively Jon Hendricks-inspired vocal style has made him a popular draw is a late addition to the two-dayer appearing on the opening day.

Peter King, the UK’s internationally known bebop alto saxophonist will be appearing with his quartet. King has been playing in high profile situations since as a teenager he performed on the opening night of the original Ronnie Scott’s club on Gerrard Street in 1959. He has performed with many of the greats including Bud Powell, Milt Jackson, Elvin Jones, Phil Woods, and Jackie McLean to name only a few.

Promoting established individual jazz artists and groups as well as those yet to surface on the scene is a key objective of the Highgate Jazz With Soul Festival, not only to provide a platform for such high profile musicians, but also to embrace the creative, passionate side that drives them on – the soul, according to the organisers. The concert space will also feature an exhibition of paintings by Jamie Boyd and there will also be a jam session.
