The concert, on 16 November, will feature Bollani solo and in duet with French pianist Martial Solal plus a performance by Polish pianist Marcin Wasilewski’s Trio of music from the recent ECM album Faithful. Also just added for the festival, that’s held in association with BBC Radio 3 and sponsored by Jazzwise, are a number of shows at the Southbank’s Purcell Room including Portico Quartet with new member Keir Vine on hang and electronics (19 Nov); guitarist Phil Robson with the IMS Quintet featuring Mark Turner (15 Nov); Jazz at Café Society, a tribute to the 1940s New York club with China Moses, Gwyneth Herbert and Alexander Stewart (17 Nov) and an evening echoing the musical legacy of Persia with spiked fiddle player Kayhan Kaylor and tombak drummer Majid Khaladji (13 Nov).
Also at the Purcell Room is a strand of trumpet specials paying tribute to some of the music’s founding fathers including, Roy Eldridge and Charlie Shavers – The Trumpet Battle presented by drummer and jazz historian Richard Pite and featuring Enrico Tomasso (12 Nov, 3pm) and The Buck Clayton Legacy Band with Jazzwise writer, broadcaster and bassist Alyn Shipton, saxophonist Matthias Seuffert and Alan Barnes (12 Nov. 7.45pm).
And continuing the trumpet theme is a special concert devoted to the European premiere of a new silent movie about the young Louis Armstrong in New Orleans at the Barbican on 13 November. Filmed in the style of Charlie Chaplin movies, Louis will be accompanied by a live score specially written by Wynton Marsalis and will feature Wycliffe Gordon, Wes Anderson, Cyrus Chestnut and drummer Herlin Riley. Also set for this year's LJF and just announced is an appearance by film maker and musician Emir Kusturica and the No Smoking Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall on 19 November.
