Jazz breaking news: Lovano/DeJohnette/Spalding Spring Quartet, Frisell, Glasper and Bates for Gateshead 10th

Thursday, October 10, 2013

The Gateshead International Jazz Festival, which runs from 4-6 April 2014, has just announced it’s set to celebrate its 10th anniversary in style with big name headliners as part of a striking American-led programme.

These include Grammy winning hip hop-influenced jazz pianist Robert Glasper and his band, and the new heavy-hitting Spring Quartet that unites iconic saxophonist Joe Lovano and legendary drummer Jack DeJohnette with young star bassist/singer Esperanza Spalding and gifted Argentine pianist Leo Genovese (all pictured above).

Taking place in Newcastle upon Tyne’s architecturally stunning Sage Gateshead live music and conference venue, the festival also includes appearances by the Bill Frisell Trio, and British pianist Django Bates’ Belovèd Bird trio performing with the Norrbotten Big Band from Sweden as they reprise their critically acclaimed performance of Charlie Parker’s music at this year’s Proms in August. This concert also features an opening set from Swedish saxophonist Joakim Milder who will perform music by cult Northeast pop band Prefab Sprout. Watch Jazzwise more additions to the programme as they are announced in the weeks ahead.
