Jazz breaking news: Manchester Jazz Festival commissions new works by George King and Pete Moser

Friday, February 10, 2012

The Manchester Jazz Festival has announced details of two new commissioned works for this year’s festival to be held in July.

The MJF Originals will feature Songs of the Caged Bird, a new song cycle by Manchester composer-pianist George King, featuring singer Doreen Edwards, and a string octet from Manchester Camerata. The work sets music to poems and speeches from the US civil rights era. The second commission is awarded to Morecambe-based multi-instrumentalist and producer Pete Moser in collaboration with More Music Morecambe. Sound Games is based on improvisation inspired by sporting activity and archived film footage of athletic movements and moments. – Stephen Graham
