Jazz breaking news: Matt Ridley takes Thymos on UK tour

Wednesday, October 30, 2013

The Matt Ridley Quartet has embarked on an extensive UK tour, playing music from their new album Thymos, launched at Pizza Express Jazz Club at the beginning of October.

With influences ranging from funk, 20th-century minimalism and Middle Eastern music, Ridley’s compositions promise an excitingly varied palette of sounds.

The quartet line-up has Ridley on double bass, Jason Yarde on saxophones, John Turville on piano and George Hart on drums. Ridley’s group was launched in 2011 as a trio, with Yarde joining for some of the Thymos compositions. The album also features Attab Haddad on oud and another percussionist, Vasilis Sirkis.

The band’s tour is supported by Jazz Services Touring Support Scheme and dates are; Capstone Theatre, Liverpool Hope University (8 Nov); The Hive, Shrewsbury (9 Nov); The Hen and Chicken, Bristol (10 Nov); Fleece Jazz, Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Essex (15 Nov); Maltings Theatre, Berwick upon Tweed (20 Nov); Cambridge Modern Jazz @ The Hidden Rooms, Cambridge (28 Nov) and Colchester Arts Centre (1 Dec).
