Jazz breaking news: Matthew Bourne provides synth centrepiece for Marsden Jazz Fest

Wednesday, October 9, 2013

The 22nd Marsden Jazz Festival, which runs from 11-13 October in the Pennine village of Marsden in West Yorkshire, mixes up smooth crossover swing and wild synth madness with headline performances from Pasadena Roof Orchestra and a new suite ‘The Bourne Synthesiser Show’ written for jazz synthesiser created specially for the festival by wildly virtuosic keyboardist Matthew Bourne (pictured).

There are more cutting edge sounds from Irish bassist Mick Coady’s Synergy featuring in-demand US altoist David Binney alongside saxophonist Julian Argüelles, pianist Ivo Neame and drummer James Maddren, while latin-jazz guitarist Antonio Forcione lines up with a fine band featuring percussionist Anselmo Netto and bassist Matheus Nova.

Also appearing are top UK jazz guitarist John Etheridge with his Trio North; noir-ish jazz rockers Get The Blessing, jazz chanteuse Tina May and her quartet with pianist Nikki Iles and nine-piece Afro-jazz dance group Ariya Astrobeat Arkestra. The festival’s New Stream strand also includes radical guitar maestro Chris Sharkey, with his new acoustic group Batteries, on an entirely improvised gig, while rising star trumpeter Laura Jurd’s quartet play folk and classical-influenced originals. The programme includes over 40 free events in pubs, clubs, halls and outdoor venues around the village.
