Jazz breaking news: Nick Tyson’s F-IRE Collective Commission ‘Chamber’ Now Touring
Friday, April 20, 2012
Chamber is the creation of multi-award winning guitarist/composer Nick Tyson (pictured) perhaps best known for his role in the popular dub, ska and roots reggae outfit Gentleman’s Dub Club.
However, Tyson’s latest project Chamber, currently touring the UK, marks an intriguing departure from his previous work as he explores new swathes of music from middle eastern, classical chamber, and folk traditions in his writing for an exciting line up comprising a three piece rhythm section plus strings.
Tyson’s compositional textures have an expansive, cinematic, almost orchestral quality that fully immerse the listener, think Brad Mehldau’s Highway Rider meets Dave Holland’s Thimar. The band’s sound is warm, dense and rich as a result of the almost entirely stringed instrumentation (save for the gentle rumblings and intricate grooves of percussionist Sebastian Hankins).
Featuring Tyson on guitar, Paul Baxter on double bass, drummer Hankins and the all-female string section of Charlotte Glasson, Ruth Gibson, and Kate Shortt, the band is currently playing a string of UK dates which are as follows: Capstone Theatre, Liverpool (tonight, 20 April); Seven Arts, Leeds (21 April); Square Chapel, Halifax (22 April); and Arts Centre, Colchester (6 May).
