Jazz breaking news: Pianist John China dies

Wednesday, September 12, 2012

Pianist John China, who has died after a short illness, was a nice guy and very good mainstream pianist, was the cornerstone of Laurie Morgan's house trio at their Sunday afternoon jam sessions at Crouch End for years.

Particularly good at accompanying singers, he seemed in good health when I heard him a few months ago.

His death after so short an illness will come as a shock to his many friends and will be sorely missed. His funeral will take place at his family's town of Barnstaple in Devon. Had it been in London the chapel would have been packed.
