Jazz breaking news: Preston-Glasgow-Lowe power up on UK tour

Tuesday, September 10, 2013

Young jazz-rock fusion trio Preston-Glasgow-Lowe set out on a 17-date Jazz Services/Arts Council supported tour of the UK this October and into November.

The band features three of the UK’s rising star virtuosos in the form of guitarist David Preston, six-string electric bassist Kevin Glasgow and drummer Laurie Lowe who create a compelling mix of sophisticated harmonic/rhythmic ideas and dazzling soloistic technique.

Each has worked with a wide range of high profile jazz artists such as award-winning vocalist Ian Shaw and internationally acclaimed US diva Melody Gardot, with whom Preston has collaborated with as both songwriter and performer, alongside other sessions with Empirical, Claire Martin and Jim Mullen. Bass guitar monster Kevin Glasgow has been a part of the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra for the last couple of years, performing with the likes of John Scofield and Randy Brecker. He’s also a key member of SNJO leader/sax colossus Tommy Smith’s hard-firing Karma quartet and is currently touring as part of drummer Asaf Sirkis’ power trio. Drummer Lowe has an impressive CV too including live and studio work with Gilad Atzmon, Nicolas Meier, Tony Kofi, Dave O’Higgins and Andy Sheppard while he’s also a member of pianist Robert Mitchell’s group Panacea and acclaimed US electronica/hip hop band The Foreign Exchange.

The trio’s music takes inspiration from a variety of sources but the close harmonic clusters of cult guitar virtuoso Allan Holdsworth and the angular rock-edged attack of Kurt Rosenwinkel come readily to mind. The band recorded their debut EP earlier this year, produced by fellow axe-man Paul Stacey (best known for his work with Oasis and the Black Crows), and plan on recording a full album soon after they complete their forthcoming tour, the resulting record should be released in early 2014. The enterprising band have also produced several high-quality videos – one of which you can see below. Catch them on the following dates: Verdict, Brighton (25 Oct); London Guitar Festival, Kings Place, London (26 Oct); Modern Jazz Club, Southampton (27 Oct); Jazz Bar, Edinburgh (30 Oct); Queens Hall Arts Centre, Hexham (1 Nov); Zeffirellis, Ambleside (2 Nov); Splinter, Newcastle (3 Nov); Workshop and performance Leeds College of Music (4 Nov); Sela Bar, Leeds (5 Nov); Matt & Phreds, Manchester (6 Nov); Soundcellar, Poole (7 Nov); Dempsys, Cardiff (12 Nov); Bebop Club, Bristol (15 Nov); and Bonington Theatre, Nottingham (21 Nov).
