Jazz breaking news: Ravi Coltrane Signs To Blue Note And Plays London Dates

Thursday, August 5, 2010

The New York Times, in a story published yesterday, revealed that Ravi Coltrane has signed to Blue Note records – the second high profile signing in recent months following the signing of trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire.

According to the article an album is due next spring, and quotes Blue Note emeritus chairman Bruce Lundvall, “Ravi’s a guy we’ve been watching for a long time.” Not a bad early birthday present for the saxophonist who turns 45 tomorrow.

Coltrane, the son of John Coltrane and Alice Coltrane, will be in London on 16 August for a recording of Radio One’s Live Session with Flying Lotus (real name Steven Ellison), a nephew of Alice Coltrane’s. The pair will play a further gig on 18 August at the ICA in London. The one-off UK show, Flying Lotus Presents Infinity, draws on material from FL’s album Cosmogramma. Along with Ravi Coltrane, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and Rebekah Raff are also to take part.

Dubstep producer Flying Lotus has worked recently with singer José James on the album Black Magic released earlier this year by Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood label. Ravi Coltrane’s last album was Blending Times released last year when he featured on the cover of Jazzwise in March.
