Jazz breaking news: Robert Glasper Experiment head for Village Underground

Tuesday, July 23, 2013

Grammy award-winning pianist Robert Glasper and his Experiment band are set to play Village Underground, in Hoxton, London on Monday 29 July.

Following a headline performance at Love Supreme Jazz Festival earlier this month, and a sell-out show at the Royal Festival Hall during last year’s London Jazz Festival, Glasper’s hip-hop-influenced sound, with its ingenious mix of improvisation and accessible hook-laden melodies, has proved irresistible to a wide range of fans of jazz and beyond.

Glasper’s album Black Radio won the Best R&B Album Grammy in February this year, and a follow-up album is expected on Blue Note this autumn. Glasper is also known for his interpretations of Radiohead songs, mixing up jazz infused versions of ‘Everything In Its Right Place’, ‘Reckoner’, and at Love Supreme, ‘Packt Like Sardines In A Crushd Tin Box’.

The Village Underground holds warm memories for Glasper fans. During his epic Barbican appearance in May last year, Glasper stunned and delighted audiences by announcing an impromptu extra gig at the VU the following night, midway through a set, so as not to disappoint those who had not been able to get in. Tickets for 29 July are expected to sell out quickly for this ‘intimate’, 700 capacity venue, located in Hoxton, east London.
