Jazz breaking news: Roller Trio and Gogo Penguin Hit The Road
Friday, September 27, 2013
A barnstorming tour by young UK bands Roller Trio (pictured) and GoGo Penguin kicks off on 1 October at Manchester’s Band on the Wall in a double bill of new and eclectic progressive jazz.
The Mercury Prize nominated Roller Trio headline with their rhythmically charged, melodically exciting mix of experimental sounds and hard-hitting grooves. The tour follows dynamic performances at Love Supreme Jazz Festival, Brecon Jazz Festival and Ronnie Scott’s this summer, which included new material from the Leeds-based group, to be released on their forthcoming album expected early next year. The group features James Mainwaring on tenor sax and electronics, drummer Luke Reddin-Williams and guitarist Luke Wynter, all appearing on these final few dates of 2013 before taking a short break to finish their second album, following last year’s acclaimed self-titled debut.
Joining them on tour are GoGo Penguin, playing their own brand of drum ‘n’ bass fuelled acoustic trio music, with Chris Illingworth on piano, Nick Blacka on double bass and Rob Turner on drums. Citing influences from e.s.t. to Aphex Twin to Debussy, the Mancunians’ debut album Fanfares was nominated for the 2013 Worldwide Awards’ Jazz Album of the Year.
The tour begins on Tuesday 1 October at Band on The Wall, Manchester, and continues at: The Grand, Clitheroe (Wed 2 Oct); The Forum, Barrow in Furness (Thurs 3 Oct); ARC, Stockton on Tees (Fri 4 Oct); and The Ropery Hall, Barton on Humber (Sat 5 Oct).
