Jazz breaking news: Sam Crockatt Quartet To Release New Album Flood Tide

Monday, July 25, 2011

The Sam Crockatt Quartet is set to release its second album Flood Tide through Babel records on Monday 26 September, accompanied by some live performances throughout the autumn.

Part of London’s Loop Collective, the group, comprised of Crockatt (saxophone), pianist Kit Downes, bassist Oli Hayhurst and drummer Ben Reynolds, is looking for a breakthrough with the album having received strong word of mouth backing since starting out. Crockatt, who has performed at venues such as Ronnie Scott’s and the Royal Albert Hall, counts Wayne Shorter and Joe Henderson as important influences.

The band’s profile has grown since the release of their successful first album Howeird (2009), which won album of the year in the Parliamentary Jazz Awards. Flood Tide was recorded last year in the Italian town of Cavalicco, in a studio sometimes used by ECM records. Crockatt describes it as an “incredibly peaceful place where it feels like time stands still,” and says that the music reflects a kind of magnetic ebb and flow which inspired the album’s title. The tracks bring together a range of ideas, from folky melody and loose improvisation in ‘Trilogy’ to the haunting tune and rumbling drums of ‘The Prophet.’

The album launch will take place at the Vortex Jazz Club, London, on Monday 3 October, and the quartet will then perform at the Leicester Jazz House (26 Oct), Cologne (30 Oct), London Jazz Festival (19 Nov) and The Symphony Hall Foyer Birmingham (2 December).
