Jazz breaking news: Sarah Gillespie heads to the Albany and out on tour
Tuesday, November 12, 2013
Greenwich-born singer songwriter, Sarah Gillespie, heads out on a series of tour dates later this month and into December and early 2014 in support of her latest album, Glory Days.
The centrepiece of these is a special concert in south east London’s The Albany on 23 November, as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival. She’ll be joined by a stellar trio of Mercury Prize nominated pianist Kit Downes, drummer Enzo Zirilli and bassist Ben Bastin all performing material from Stalking Juliet (2009), In The Current Climate (2011), Glory Days (2013) and her anti-war narrative suite, The War on Trevor (2012). She will also make a guest appearance with longtime collaborator/producer/saxophonist Gilad Atzmon’s headlining LJF concert at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on 21 November.
The group will be giving her songs a jazz twist in what is home territory for Gillespie, as she commented: “I’m so delighted to be playing a concert in south east London where I was born and live today. The Albany Theatre is a wonderful space and I’ll have my full quartet with me. We will be playing material from all three of my albums plus a scattering of vintage blues tunes.”
Known for her mix of bold socially conscious lyrics and emotionally charged vocals Gillespie draws on influences such as Bessie Smith, Bob Dylan, Cole Porter, Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen. Gillespie and her band appear at the following venues: with Gilad Atzmon and the Orient House Ensemble, Queen Elizabeth Hall, London (Nov 21); The Albany, London (Nov 23); Guildhall, Lichfield (Nov 29); The Stables, Milton Keynes (Dec 10); The Vortex, London (Jan 21) and Wakefield Jazz Club, Wakefield (Jan 24).
