Jazz breaking news: Scarborough Jazz Fest Returns With A Distinctive French Flavour

Monday, June 20, 2011

September’s Scarborough Jazz Festival proudly celebrates a link-up with the lively French jazz scene this year.

The Yorkshire seaside town’s website prominently features a tiny sandcastle on its homepage with the British and French flags standing proudly together, and this year’s festival fittingly features some big French names from the present scene as well as from yesteryear.

Top of the bill is an appearance by the Jacques Loussier Trio putting Bach and Satie centrestage as a vehicle for improvisation, while hot new French group the Hadouk Trio, the progressive Orchestre National de Jazz and popular French-Beninese singer Mina Agossi are also on the bill for the three-day event which runs from 23-25 September.

Not to be outdone there’s some strong UK-based talent set for Scarborough including Gilad Atzmon’s Orient House Ensemble, Christine Tobin, Alan Barnes, NYJO, Liz Fletcher, and the Kate Williams Quartet featuring flautist Gareth Lockrane. – Stephen Graham
