Gwilym Simcock (left) launches his new double album Blues Vignette with his trio this week as Jazzwise hits the streets, at the Pizza Express Jazz Club in London on Friday and then beds in for a season at the Soho club with guests coming down to join him in the basement venue.
On 28 November the trio is joined by saxophonist Julian Arguelles who these days spends much of his time playing with the German HR Big Band based in Frankfurt. An additional sax player Stan Sulzmann, who Simcock works with in the group Neon, joins on Sunday 29th and then on Monday 30 it’s all change with German bass clarinettist Klaus Gesing (heard to effect on Norma Winstone’s album Distances) joining the trio. Trumpeter Gerard Presencer – best known for his work with 1990s acid jazz Blue Note samplers US3 – is the next evening’s guest and then on 2, 3 and 4 December it’s the crack Austrian guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel joining Simcock. – Stephen Graham
