Monday, October 22, 2012
The nominees have been revealed for the first ever Jazz FM Jazz Awards, the winners of which will be announced at a ceremony on 31 January 2013.
International in scope but with a strong UK focus the ten categories include International Jazz Artist, Cutting Edge Award for Jazz Innovation, Album Of The Year, Jazz Media, Best UK Newcomer, UK Jazz Artist of the Year, UK Vocalist of the Year, UK Instrumentalist of the Year, Live UK shows of the Year and Best UK Jazz Venue.
The nominees span a pleasingly wide range of styles and acknowledge the strength of both instrumental and vocal jazz today with the likes of jazz legend Sonny Rollins, Gregory Porter, Robert Glasper, Jamie Cullum, Phronesis, Roller Trio and Ian Shaw all nominated. Jazz FM have commented that the awards aim to recognise ‘exceptional contributions to jazz this year’ – while the public will also be able to vote for UK Jazz Artist of the Year – with voting lines opening on 1 November (see link below). The final list of 34-nominees was selected by 13-strong panel of jazz industry experts each of who submitted their own set of choices in each category. The winners will be named at the awards ceremony on 31 January at One Marylebone in central London, and will be selected by an expert panel of judges.
