Jazz breaking news: Stanko Pays Tribute to Polanski Composer Komeda at London’s Polish Film Festival

Friday, March 19, 2010

Trumpeter Tomasz Stanko will appear at the Barbican Hall as part of the Kinoteka Polish Film Festival on 27 March, playing the music of pianist and composer Krzysztof Komeda.

Komeda played a key role in the development of Polish jazz before his death in 1969, also composing film scores including Roman Polanski’s Knife in the Water and Rosemary’s Baby. Stanko and Komeda recorded Astigmatic together in 1965, and in 1997 Stanko released an album of Komeda’s music, Litania, on ECM.

Following his acclaimed London Jazz Festival concert last November, Stanko brings a hand-picked quintet featuring Adam Pieronczyk on saxes, Dominik Wania on piano, Slawomir Kurkiewicz on bass and Olavi Louhivuori on drums. The concert will also be accompanied by specially created visuals.

Stanko’s performance will be preceded by the world premiere of a short animated film by the Brothers Quay, Maska.
