Jazz breaking news: Trichotomy Take Gentle War On Tour

Friday, January 7, 2011

Leading Australian piano trio Trichotomy (pictured left) hit the UK this February on a nationwide tour to promote their second album The Gentle War, released on Naim Jazz on 24 January.

Led by energetic young pianist Sean Foran, alongside bassist John Parker and drummer Pat Marchisella, the band have already received praise for their debut album Variations, drawing on a blend of influences that build on the melodically-charged sound of EST with the rhythmic drive of Neil Cowley and The Bad Plus. It’s the latter trio’s producer Brent Sigmeth who has worked onThe Gentle War, and helped to bring a rockier, more aggressive edge to Trichotomy’s highly kinetic approach, weaving tightly-wound written sections with free flowing improvisation.

Taking inspiration from a whole variety of sources, that includes the pop-hook sensibility of ‘Chase’, to the simplicity of ‘Wrestle’, the meditative ‘Blues For The Space’ and the savage anti-reality TV riffing of ‘Shut Up’, the album shows the trio stretching both musically and conceptually. The dates announced so far include Turner Sims Hall, University of Southampton (15 Feb); Vortex Jazz Club, London (16 Feb); Watermill Jazz Friends Provident Social Club, Dorking (17 Feb); Seven Arts Centre, Leeds (18 Feb); Band on the Wall, Manchester (22 Feb); The Cross, Moseley, Birmingham (23 Feb); Cafe Jazz, Cardiff (24 Feb) and The Stables, Wavendon, Milton Keynes (25 Feb).
