Jazz Breaking News: trioVD, Chris Potter And Ibrahim Electric To Bail Out Ireland At The Galway Jazz Festival
Thursday, November 18, 2010
Despite the impending bail out and the inevitable predictions of doom and gloom which are sure to follow, Ireland and more specifically Galway, will be letting their hair down at the Galway Jazz Festival this weekend.
Kicking off tonight the four-day festival will play host to a variety of acts from the UK, across Europe and the States, while also giving Irish artists some much-needed time in the spotlight. Some of the acts featured at the festival include the Leeds-based band trioVD, and US tenor saxophone-sensation Chris Potter and Underground who, less than a week ago, were in action at the London Jazz Festival. Underground will be supported by Irish group ReDiviDeR, led by Dubliner Matt Jacobson.
Other headliners at the festival are the Luxembourg-based Pascal Schumacher Quartet; groovy organ trio Ibrahim Electric from Denmark and Irish acts the Phil Ware Trio and folk legend Mary Coughlan. For those festivalgoers needing more jazz and more drink, Hotel Meyrick on Eyre Square will be opening its doors to host the jazz festival club where punters will be able to go after the main events have finished and feast their ears on more jazz until the wee hours in the morning.
Running this Saturday and Sunday there will be a Festival Jazz Trail, which promises to “take you around the jazz heritage and hotspots of the city, to get a small peek at the jazz activities going on all year round in Galway.” The festival takes place in a half dozen venues across the city including the Radisson, Monroe’s and the Crane Bar.
