Jazz breaking news: Trumpet Warriors Battle It Out At LSO St. Luke’s

Thursday, January 20, 2011

A new series of concerts devoted to up-and-coming trumpeters has been announced for LSO St.

Luke’s in London starting next month.

Titled Trumpet Warriors the concerts are promoted by Jazz FM and kick off on 11 February with Quentin Collins, who’s worked with Dylan Howe and Ed Jones and released an acclaimed debut album If Not Now, Then When in 2007, and 21-year old Henry Armburg-Jennings, who Jazzwise recently covered in Taking Off, engaging in a fierce hard bop trumpet face-off.

Backed by the Leon Greening Trio this trumpet ‘battle’ promises to be an entertaining demonstration of swinging, energetic trumpet playing from two of the UK’s rising horn stars.

The second Trumpet Warriors event takes place on 3 March and features renowned US trumpeter Jeremy Pelt (pictured) and his American Quintet (pianist Danny Grissett, saxophonist JD Allen, bassist Dwayne Burno and drummer Gerald Cleaver), performing works from their new album The Talented Mr Pelt. In his first London performance in two years, Pelt and his US All-stars will be supported by students from the Royal Academy of Music’s Jazz department. A third concert follows in May with names to be announced shortly and this will form part of Jazz FM’s Jazz in the City festival. – Himali Dave
