Jazz breaking news: Win tickets to Tim Richards 60th birthday night at Kings Place
Monday, September 17, 2012
Pianist and composer Tim Richards (pictured left) celebrates his 60th birthday and over 35 years on the British and international jazz scene with a special gig at London’s Kings Place on Saturday 13 October.
The gig is part of The Base series of weekly jazz concerts that take place on Saturdays in Hall 2, the 200-seater adjoining concert space at the venue.
The evening kicks off with his Trio, featuring bassist Dominic Howles and up and coming drummer Peter Ibbetson, who will be playing a selection of standards and originals from Richards’ three albums on 33 Records. The second half will feature his new sextet, which includes trumpeter Dick Pearce, saxophonist Ed Jones and vibist Ralph Wyld. Both Pearce and Jones were members of Tim’s nine-piece Great Spirit band that toured the UK several times between 1999 and 2007, and released two albums, including the acclaimed Epistrophy. Just as Great Spirit frequently mixed up-and-coming young lions such as Jason Yarde and Seb Rochford with seasoned names such as Pete King and Gilad Atzmon, the new sextet showcases talented student vibist Ralph Wyld, who’s in his second year at the Royal Academy.
The varied programme will also feature a first outing for Richards’ jazz-meets-classical Duet project with renowned contemporary/classical pianist Kate Ryder. Between them they will perform several specially written piano pieces, which reflect Tim’s current preoccupation with multiple pianos (see the video below).
