Julian Joseph re-imagines ‘Tristan and Isolde’ at London’s Royal Opera House.

Thursday, August 15, 2013

Pianist, composer and broadcaster Julian Joseph performs a new work, 'Windows into Tristan & Isolde', with his All Star Big Band at the Linbury Studio Theatre, Royal Opera House in London’s Covent Garden on 22 September as part of Stephen Fry’s Deloitte Ignite series.

The performance is a re-imagining of the ancient celtic folk-tale thought to date back to the 11th century.

Joseph collaborates with the librettist Mike Phillips to rework the Arthurian legend, setting the story in more recent times while continuing to reflect the timeless human failings and frailties of jealousy, misunderstanding, desire and self-sacrifice. The concert will also feature a number of jazz standards and Joseph’s own compositions.

The pianist’s 20-piece big band will be joined on stage by the vocal talents of Carleen Anderson, winner of the 2013 Jazz FM UK vocalist of the year; Cleveland Watkiss, who has recently appeared with Wynton Marsalis, the BBC Big Band and the Kenny Wheeler Big Band; Ken Papenfus, from Relish and Christine Tobin, winner of a 2012 British Composer Award (BASCA) for Sailing to Byzantium. Also featuring in the Julian Joseph All Star Big Band are bassist Mark Hodgson, drummer Mark Mondesir, trumpeter Russell Bennett, saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings and trombonist Richard Henry.
