Legendary Danish bassist NHOP dies

Wednesday, April 20, 2005

Danish bassist Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen has died suddenly at the age of 58.

One of the key mainstream jazz bassists, his rich, swinging tone was heavily associated with the sound of Oscar Peterson for over 30 years. He also made hundreds of recordings with a range of US greats including Dexter Gordon, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Bud Powell and Kenny Drew. He was part of the Copenhagen Montmartre club scene in its heyday when many expatriate American musicians made their home in Europe. He was due to appear with Oscar Peterson in London and Manchester at concerts later in the year.
