Life With The Lions – New Jazz Club For South London

Monday, September 28, 2009

Good news for jazz fans south of the river comes with the opening this week of Jazz at the White Lion, a new jazz club launching on Friday, 2 October, at the White Lion pub, 232 Streatham High Road, London SW16.

The weekly club opens up with tenor saxophonist Mornington Lockett and the Andrea Vicari Trio on the first night.

Run by Andrea Vicari and Dorian Lockett, who previously presented more than 250 concerts over five years at The Bedford in neighbouring Balham, the aim is to promote top established names and rising stars with their own groups or with the house band, which features Vicari on piano, Dorian Lockett, bass, and Lorraine Baker, drums.

This exciting venture brings jazz back to Streatham where, in the 1950s and 60s, the area had its own jazz club and the legendary Swing Shop, a veritable jazz shrine run by Dave Carey which became an essential hang for jazz and blues collectors as well as a hub of the South London blues scene in the mid-1960s.

Upcoming confirmed dates include: Andrew McCormack (22 October), Alan Barnes (30 October), Clare Hirst (6 November), Pete Wareham (13 November), Don Weller (20 November) and Quentin Collins (27 Nov). Admission is £5 with £3 for concessions.
