Lighthouse Trio Play Liverpool’s Philharmonic Hall This Weekend
Wednesday, April 29, 2009
The latest stage of Tim Garland’s tour of the UK with his Lighthouse Trio takes place this weekend at Liverpool’s Philharmonic Hall.
The trio, which includes pianist Gwilym Simcock and drummer Asaf Sirkis, was featured on the cover of Jazzwise earlier this year following the release of their debut album, Libra. Garland, who has performed in situations as diverse as Chick Corea’s group Origin and with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, derives inspiration for his latest project from an equally wide range of sources. From the pioneer of the Third Stream, Gunther Schuller, he picked up on a project to incorporate improvisation into contemporary compositions for large ensembles, cultivating an ambition to balance the written and improvised passages of the trio’s music. Elements of jazz and classical music are prominent stylistic elements in the group’s performances together with rhythmic patterns of middle eastern origin. The Lighthouse Trio will perform in Liverpool on Friday 1 and Saturday 2 May. Other dates include Peterborough Jazz Club (Friday 15 May) and Pizza Express Jazz Club, London (Thursday 28-Saturday 30 May). For more go to www.timgarland.com
