Outhouse Fire Up The Ruhabi Project

Wednesday, September 30, 2009

Outhouse, the Loop Collective group led by drummer Dave Smith and saxophonist Robin Fincker, return next week with their Outhouse Ruhabi project that includes five West African Wolof drummers.

The project, first hatched in the Gambia in late-2007 by Dave Smith who has studied West African rhythms, debuted on a UK tour last year, including an acclaimed appearance at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival.

The project brings together an intriguing mix of Outhouse’s twin sax-fronted edgy jazz improvisation with the cross rhythms of the Wolof drummers that develop into the kind of intense fiery dialogue that rarely fails to ignite audiences. The extended ensemble, that also includes saxophonist Tom Challenger and bassist Johnny Brierley and the drummers led by Baboucar Camara, have recorded a new album Ruhabi scheduled for release on 12 October and play nationwide dates showcasing the new material.

Dates are: Latest Music Bar, Brighton (7 October); St Gregory’s church, Canterbury (8); CBSO Centre, Birmingham (9); Ronnie Scott’s (12, 13, 15) Foyer, Queen Elizabeth Hall, London (14); Assembly Rooms, Derby (16); St Mary’s church, Happisburgh, Norfolk (17); Theatre Royal, Bath (18); Huddersfield university, Huddersfield (20); Seven Arts Centre, Leeds (22); Fleece Jazz, Stoke by Nayland Golf Club, Suffolk (23) and Café Oto, London (24).
