The project, first hatched in the Gambia in late-2007 by Dave Smith who has studied West African rhythms, debuted on a UK tour last year, including an acclaimed appearance at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival.
The project brings together an intriguing mix of Outhouse’s twin sax-fronted edgy jazz improvisation with the cross rhythms of the Wolof drummers that develop into the kind of intense fiery dialogue that rarely fails to ignite audiences. The extended ensemble, that also includes saxophonist Tom Challenger and bassist Johnny Brierley and the drummers led by Baboucar Camara, have recorded a new album Ruhabi scheduled for release on 12 October and play nationwide dates showcasing the new material.
