Roberto Pla Brings Latin Fever To Edinburgh Fringe

Tuesday, August 18, 2009

Renowned London-based Cuban conga player Roberto Pla is set to bring his storming latin jazz band to the Edinburgh fringe for a series of gigs in Edinburgh’s ‘El Barrio’ Latin Quarter.

Taking place every day (except Wednesdays) between now and 30th August Pla’s Latin Ensemble will perform three separate shows beginning in the afternoon at 2pm with a children’s latin percussion workshop, that will allow kids of all ages to play along with this top class band and learn something about the complexities of latin rhythms in a fun and friendly setting. The next set at 5pm will feature latin jazz with Caribbean flavours that recall Pla’s time in the early 1980s when he played music with latin fusion band Cayenne as well as touring extensively with eccentric singer Slim Gaillard. The evening set dubbed ‘Salsa En El Barrio Latino’ begins at 9pm with a much more up tempo set of songs perfect to dance the night away to a selection of mambo, merengue and salsa classics performed by Pla’s highly skilled band. The line up includes world-class percussionist Satin Singh, plus singers Osvaldo Chacon and Jose Volga (also on piano), bassist Elpidio Caicedo and a horn section that includes trombonists Paul Taylor and Eddie Rieband, trumpeter Steve Dawson, and saxophonist Martin Harman.
