TrioVD Is Latest Act Added To Canary Wharf Jazz Festival Line-Up

Friday, August 6, 2010

The Canary Wharf Jazz Festival gets going for its fourth year on Friday 13 August and runs until Sunday 15 August with free entry to all concerts.

The festival, based at Canada Square Park in Central London, has an impressive array of artists over the three days including Robert Mitchell, Pee Wee Ellis and Alex Wilson, with trioVD taking the latest slot on Saturday 14 August – fresh from their appearance at the Brit Jazz Festival at Ronnie Scott’s two days earlier.

Friday 13 August sees two artists who have albums out in the near future. Robert Mitchell’s 3io kicks off the festival in the evening, with The Cusp – an album by his Panacea group – due for September, while Latin-jazz groundbreaker Alex Wilson plays the later set, with his album Mali Latino to be released in October.

The Saturday features an extremely diverse line-up. The day kicks off with The Roundhouse Jazz Ensemble, a group of 10 young musicians aged 14-21 and led by pianist Leon Michener. The afternoon sees the explosive jazz-rock of Leeds trioVD, as well as Manchester-based trumpeter Matthew Halsall. The evening’s set will showcase the funky sound of The Baker Brothers as well as the soulful vocalist Ruby Turner.

The biggest name on the final day is legendary saxophonist Pee Wee Ellis, who is of course most famous for having played with James Brown, as well as Van Morrison. Ellis closes out the festival, with talented singer Natalie Williams – who is also performing at the Brit Jazz Fest this Sunday – Cuban-born drummer Ernesto Simpson and the Haggis Horns taking to the stage earlier in the day.
