Tuesday, April 16, 2013
Sax legends Wayne Shorter (pictured left) and Sonny Rollins, South African trumpet icon Hugh Masekela, guitar guru John McLaughlin’s Remember Shakti, Norwegian bass titan Arild Andersen and Brad Mehldau and Mark Guiliana’s mesmerising jazztronica project, Mehliana, are among the first tranche of names confirmed for the 2013 London Jazz Festival under its new headline sponsor agreement with EFG.
This year will be the 21st edition of the festival, which takes place from 15-24 November, and is the first with a new headline sponsor in the form of global private banking group EFG International, who ups its involvement after the previous sponsorship agreement with BBC Radio 3 came to an end last year. EFG have been involved with the festival since 2008 – supporting major headline artists through their EFG Excellence Series. Other performances so far confirmed include the opening-night vocal gala, Jazz Voice, the Stan Sulzmann Big Band, Schlippenbach Trio vs Noszferatu, Charlie Parker on Dual, Tigran Hamasyan, Gilad Atzmon and Madeleine Peyroux.
The EFG London Jazz Festival, which is sponsored by Jazzwise, is London’s biggest citywide music event and stretches to over 200 gigs across the capital, ranging from free spaces to all the key jazz venues, clubs and bars with major headliners appearing at the Royal Festival Hall and Queen Elizabeth Hall, and Southbank Centre Clore Ballroom and Front Room free stages, as well as major concerts at the Barbican and its free pre-concert stages. Tickets go on sale on Friday 19 April.
