Bobby Previte / The Constellations Ensemble profile
Tuesday, October 10, 2006
Drummer and composer Bobby Previtge, described as "a serious composer with the heart of a roadhouse rocker", by the Village Voice,
has such a powerful presence he quite happily leads from the back, disguising his chops in a block-rocking swing feel that is at home backing gritty street level grooves but with enough subtlety of timing and feel to blend in wherever he chooses to. Combine this with his punchy, form-shattering writing and arranging and you have a standout talent. Demonstrating his multifaceted abilities on his recent CMN tour, the concerts consist of two contrasting halves. The first features The Constellation Ensemble featuring harpist Zeena Parkins, playing Previte’s masterpiece; 23 micro-compositions inspired and accompanied by Miro’s 23 Constellation pieces. The latter half will feature Previte’s trio with mind-boggling eight-string guitarist Charlie Hunter and úber-jazz dectitician DJ Logic, as they whip up a funk-storm lifted from the heart of New York’s Knitting Factory.
