Julien Lourau profile

Tuesday, October 10, 2006

Paris-based saxophonist Julien Lourau seemed to be heading into the now overpopulated realms of electro-jazz / dance fusion,

mixing up sophisticated Weather Report-inspired melodies with chest-pummeling drum and bass beats, with him and the incredible flautist Magik Malik’s otherworldly vocal and flute talents flying on top. Yet his albums ‘The Rise’, 'Fire' and 'Forget' (all on Label Bleu) showcase his highly sophisticated acoustic sensibilities. Boasting catchy melodies, superlative solos and revealing a lightness of touch that some may have thought he wasn’t capable of. A blazing soloist, the huge-handed Parisian has increasingly proved he can pack a visceral emotional and cerebral punch.
