Matthew Herbert Big Band

Thursday, November 30, 2006

Maverick and ever-changing composer, keyboardist and sample guru Matthew Herbert took the traditional big band model and spun it on its head using live sampling to create a mind-blowing battery of sound.

Matthew Herbert has been trying, and generally succeeding at banging the square peg of jazz into the round hole of dance music for some time now. Herbert’s ‘Goodbye Swingtime’ album proved less linear the results less predictable, yet his ballsy attack on the straightjacket conventions of both big band and sample/dance culture combined his off-centre melodic brilliance made the band's live shows an unmissable encounters.
