Oumou Sangare

Thursday, November 30, 2006

Hailing from Wassoulou in Mali, singer Oumou Sangaré has always addressed the problems and concerns of West African women with a boldness that helped her debut ‘Moussolou’ sell an astounding 250,000 copies in Africa.

As much as she is a political voice for the unsung heroines of her homeland, she is a stylish and charismatic performer who makes beguiling music; her recent sprawling double CD ‘Oumou’ was a richly melodic journey laced with break-beats and subtle electronics that bring her music and message bang up-to-date without losing the earthy beauty of her original message.
