Richard Galliano Septet

As fortunate as virtuoso accordionist Richard Galliano was to have the granddaddy of tango music Astor Piazzola as his musical mentor in his formative years, it is his intensely personal response to Piazzola’s Tango Nuevo that has given his music an unparalleled resonance and depth.
Translating this through his meticulous understanding of modern jazz masters such as Jarrett, Parker and Trane, and harnessing it through his seven piece chamber orchestra, Piazzolla’s compositions have found their true home in Galliano’s heart and hands.
Exposing the structural beauty of these pieces while soaring through the free spaces only found in jazz this will be an exceptional night of music making. Revolutionary accordionist and composer Piazzola turned folk, classical and jazz on its head with his Tango Nuevo compositions, but today it’s virtuoso accordionist Richard Galliano who keeps the flame of this sophisticated and passionate music burning bright. Galliano has toured in recent years with three jazz heavyweights to create a truly modern spin on these contemporary standards; bass giant James Genus, equally hard hitting drummer Clarence Penn and vibes maestro Gary Burton take his tango-infused jazz to even greater heights.
