This collaboration between remaining AMM members Eddie Prevost and John Tilbury and Lebanese group “A” Trio is an exercise in improvisation that attempts to bring new meaning to the form. Although “A” Trio’s home in Beirut, Lebanon is not usually associated with improvisational music, the three players that form the group sound well versed in the technique. Their meeting with AMM provided a chance for both sets of musicians to flex their musical muscles and unleash something special, and as this recording testifies both parties excel in the task. Recorded live in Berlin at DAAD’s Mikromusik Festival in August 2015, their single piece (titled ‘Unholy Elisabeth’) evolves and explodes. Beginning with an introductory exchange between Prevost and Tilbury, the rest of the group gradually move in to add their own distinctive embellishments to what is being laid down. Especially effective here is Raed Yassin’s double-bass playing technique, a shifting of creaking strings and wooden slaps that produces a sound akin to the rolling of a galleon in high seas. Equally, Mazen Kerbaj’s muffled trumpet inclusions and Sharif Sehnaoui’s splintered acoustic guitar strumming levers open previously unexplored improvisational gateways. As the piece proceeds the assembled musicians are seamlessly joined together – sounding as though they have been playing together for centuries.
