The current Finnish jazz scene is one of the better kept secrets in European jazz. This third album by pianist Aapo Heinonen is neither loftily highbrow or ingratiatingly lowbrow, but aimed fairly and squarely at the listener's pleasure centre. It's both engaging and refreshing; this is not Finland in winter, with long dark nights and snowstorms, but Finland in one of its gorgeous summers where the sun shines and Finns walk with a spring in their step. Full of relaxed yet intense jazz that comfortably moves between electronic grooves, latin melodies and powerful modal moods, it catches the listener's ear with its excellent musicianship: Teemu Takanen's well-crafted alto solos are an album highlight, while the leader's own sophisticated playing and Héctor Lepe's fine guitar solos on ‘Way Out South’ and ‘The Truth of Another’ demonstrate how these guys know a thing or two about broadening the appeal of jazz without selling out its basic principles to the god of easy listening.
