Now in his early 30s, Aaron Parks is one of the more interesting pianists to have emerged from the US jazz scene across the last decade or so. His appearances with Terence Blanchard aged just 18 first brought him to public notice; his collaboration with Joshua Redman et al in the James Farm collective and leader discs including 2008's Invisible Cinema and 2013's Arborescence (2013) have helped cement his reputation. This new trio disc came out of an artist-in-residence stint in Denmark and a meeting with two fine musicians of that parish, Thomas Fonnesbæk and Karsten Bagge. The recording was done in a day, with the trio applying their sharp musical intellects to a series of originals and a clutch of covers – most intriguingly, ‘Tit Er Jeg Glad’ by the great Danish classical composer Carl Nielson and ‘I’m On Fire' by the great US pop-rock composer Bruce Springsteen, to which the trio bring a lovely low-intensity insouciant swing, really bossing the Boss.
