In this centenary year of Billie Holiday's birth, the release of a concert performance that brings any kind of attention to Lincoln, the singer who upheld her spirit perhaps more than anyone, is welcome. Crucially, Lincoln never imitated Lady Day, but reached something far deeper by developing her own tone and phrasing, which are so charged and languid her performances often tread a fine line between song and poetic recital. None of her sidemen are really ‘name’ players yet they provide simpatico and sensitive support, responding well to her leisurely time for the most part, and swinging without excess bluster. The set list reflects Lincoln's love of the founding fathers and mothers – Ellington, Dizzy, Billie – as well as her affinity with soul – Stevie Wonder – but the highlights are her singular originals, ‘Painted Lady’ and ‘People In Me’.
