This exemplifies the mature period of Ibrahim when, following his late 1950s-early 60s South African band work and his 1960s trio albums, he increasingly concentrated on solo performance. His particular blend of influences, including on the jazz side Monk and Ellington, could have a magical effect on listeners and, on record, the time passes remarkably quickly. The opening 19-minute medley, which gives the reissue its title, consists of three separate themes each utilising fierce ostinatos in the left hand, against right-hand melodies alternating folksy heads and energetic improv, and with frequent rhythmic tension between the two hands. Even the more lyrical parts of the subsequent programme draw in the listener, while the previously unissued flute solo ‘Khotso’ and its spoken introduction have a similar hypnotic intention. On a personal note, this album inevitably conjures up an Islington concert circa 1974, where one of the enthusiastic audience members was Dudu Pukwana and, whether you hear this in Azania or North London, it's likely to be rewarding.
