Formed in 2009, ACV is the quintet of the young, Tyneside-based jazz musician Andy Champion, a go-to double bassist on the North East jazz scene. Produced by TrioVD’s guitarist Chris Sharkey, Busk is the quintet’s second album and it’s from a new generation bridging rock – predominantly its proggy cousin – and a kind of grungefuelled jazz that’s been a fixture on the New York scene for the past few decades. Most of the members are involved in the northeast avant garde scene, but this is a recording that focuses more on melody and backbeats. Pianist Paul Edis is someone who made an impression this year as a leader with an acoustic piano recording of his own, and he plays energetically on electric keys. The set shifts from the left-field riff-building energy of Led Bib to a songs-based lyricism reminiscent of someone like the Dutch saxophonist Yuri Honing, the latter perhaps playing more to Champion’s strengths.
