Rogers delivers his tried, tested and splendidly muscular technique on a release of tight rockers that, just when they may feel a tad predictable, twist into something vigorously different. ‘Elephant’, for example, fits the hi-energy neurotic blues that underwrites several of these songs; he roars off like a hyper-ventilating Stevie Ray Vaughan merged with Steve Vai, but amid it there are synth and keys colours that refresh. So, after rocking and roughing it up with ‘Sea Miner’ a head-banging funker, Rogers will break down into ‘The Mystic’, an acoustic swampy tribute to Mississippi Fred McDowell which has a lot of Frisell (in Disfarmer mode) on board. Likewise, the stilted stonk of the title-track counterpoints the Hawaiian delirium of an oh-so-slow deconstruction of Willie Nelson’s ‘Crazy’. Splendiferously bonkers. It would’ve been nice to hear more of Ephron and Smith, but they are content to keep it simple and raw, pushing Rogers’ guitar histrionics out front where they belong.
